The Aik Berik approach, from the south

A quieter way onto the mountain through Central Lombok, starting at the Benang Stokel waterfalls. We do not run it, but people ask about it.

Where it starts

Aik Berik is a village in Central Lombok, about 27 km east of Mataram and a little under an hour's drive. It is known locally for two waterfalls, Benang Stokel and Benang Kelambu, and the trail onto the mountain begins from them.

A jeep covers the last stretch to the trailhead in roughly half an hour.

What the walk is like

The climb runs through dense forest and takes around six hours to the crater rim, with a further three hours down to the lake. The Tiara Dewi Anjani waterfall is the stretch people remember, and a herd of deer is a real possibility rather than a brochure promise.

Hunters and fishermen used this way for centuries before trekkers did, which is why it exists at all.

Why it is not one of our packages

Our trips run from Senaru, Sembalun, and Torean, which is where our guides and porters live and where we can get a team to you at short notice.

If the southern approach is what you want, message us. We will say honestly whether we can arrange it for your dates rather than selling you a route we do not run every week.
